The Process
How IUI Works
IUI may be performed in a natural cycle or combined with ovulation-induction medications such as letrozole or clomiphene to help support ovulation. Your cycle is carefully monitored using ultrasound and bloodwork to identify when ovulation is approaching.
By bringing sperm closer to the egg and carefully timing insemination around ovulation, IUI helps overcome barriers that may be preventing natural conception — all in a quick, in-office procedure.
I don't recommend IUI by default. I recommend it when it truly fits your physiology and timeline.
Step by Step
Your IUI Journey
Cycle Monitoring
Your cycle is carefully monitored using ultrasound, bloodwork, and/or ovulation predictor kits to identify when ovulation is approaching. IUI may be performed in a natural cycle or combined with ovulation-induction medications such as letrozole or clomiphene.
Trigger & Timing
In some cases, a trigger injection (Ovidrel) is used to precisely time ovulation. Most IUIs are performed within 24–48 hours of the LH surge or trigger injection, ensuring the insemination coincides with your most fertile window.
Sperm Preparation
Before insemination, sperm undergoes a laboratory process known as sperm washing. This separates the healthiest, most motile sperm from seminal fluid and debris, creating a concentrated sample optimized for fertilization. Preparation typically takes one to two hours.
The Insemination
A speculum is placed and a thin, flexible catheter is used to gently transfer the prepared sperm directly into the upper uterus, closer to where the fallopian tubes open. The experience is often described as similar to a Pap smear — quick and minimally uncomfortable.
After the Procedure
You will rest in a relaxed position for a few minutes. Normal daily activities — including exercise and intercourse — may be resumed the same day. About two weeks later, a pregnancy test determines whether implantation has occurred.

Common Questions
IUI FAQ
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that places prepared sperm directly into the uterus at the optimal time in your cycle, increasing the chance that sperm reaches the egg.
IUI may benefit individuals with irregular ovulation, mild male-factor infertility, unexplained infertility, cervical mucus issues, and those using donor sperm — including same-sex female couples and single mothers by choice.
Both. IUI can be performed in a natural cycle or with ovulation-induction medications such as letrozole or clomiphene. Your protocol is tailored to your hormones and ovulation pattern.
Your cycle is monitored with ultrasound and bloodwork. Insemination is typically performed within 24–48 hours of an LH surge or trigger injection (Ovidrel) to align with your most fertile window.
Most patients describe IUI as similar to a Pap smear — quick and minimally uncomfortable. You may rest briefly afterward and resume normal activities the same day.
Success rates vary based on age, diagnosis, and whether medications are used. Dr. Jenn will discuss realistic expectations for your specific situation during your consultation.
This depends on your age, diagnosis, and ovarian reserve. After reviewing your history and test results, Dr. Jenn will recommend a thoughtful number of IUI cycles before considering IVF.
Every IUI cycle is personalized — not protocol-driven. Treatment is tailored to your hormones, ovulation pattern, and fertility history, whether natural or medicated.
IUI may not be appropriate for severe male-factor infertility, blocked fallopian tubes, very low ovarian reserve, or when time is limited. Dr. Jenn recommends IUI only when it truly fits your physiology and timeline.
